Being an Aussie myself.. I can happily relate to this entertaining Australian animated TV series:) The show is a delightful treat for kids and parents alike. At the heart of the show is Bluey, a lovable blue heeler dog and her younger sister Bingo, an Australian cattle dog. (*Yes, Bluey is a girl:) Together, they embark on playful adventures that teach valuable life lessons through imaginative play and storytelling.

The program has won three Logie Awards, for Most Outstanding Children's Program, an International Emmy Kids Award in 2019, and a Peabody Award in 2024. It has been praised by television critics for depicting a modern everyday family life, constructive parenting messages, and the role of Bandit as a positive father figure.
Created by Aussie animator Joe Brumm, the series was inspired by his experience in raising two daughters. Brumm wanted to portray the importance of children participating in imaginative play, creating the title character 'Bluey' as a Cattle Dog to give the series an Australian voice. After consulting research on children's socio-dramatic play, including the works of Sara Smilansky and Vivian Paley, (both with backgrounds in early childhood education) Brumm wanted to highlight how self-directed, unstructured play is beneficial in shaping children and allowing them to develop naturally.

Each episode shows the parents as guides for their children, who allow them to explore their immediate surroundings independently, giving them opportunities to practise adult roles. Brumm drew inspiration from his own experiences in watching his daughters in role-play, which he described was "as natural to them as breathing". Brumm discovered the importance of play-based learning after one of his daughters struggled with formal education - so the TV Show's focus gives more emphasis to developing life skills. His creative aims were to make children laugh (parents too😄) and to show parents that children can learn while engaged in play.

Series Producer, Sam Moor describes the show as "Brumm's family life on screen":) When producing the TV pilot, Brumm's daughters were aged between four and six, like Bluey and Bingo. Brumm's process for writing has tended to be mainly 'observational' and often begins with making notes about his family's experiences - including games his kids play and any conflict that arises between them.
